Mary Shirkie of Weyburn is riding her bike to raise funds for children鈥檚 cancer research with the Great Cycle Challenge, and is currently the top fundraiser in Saskatchewan for 2020, and 25th in Canada.

鈥淢y goal was to ride 350 km in the month of August and to raise $8,500. I have ridden 353 km in the month of August and raised $8,165 for Kid鈥檚 Cancer research and support for families dealing with Kids鈥 Cancers,鈥 she said on Monday.

Fundraising continues until the end of September, so if people want to donate they can contact Shirkie directly or go online.

鈥淚 have completed 19 rides, most taking about an hour. My shortest ride was 1.9 km and my longest ride was 24.6 km. Mostly I rode on the trails that the city has developed for recreation, but I did do one ride on the highway 鈥 not my preferred place to ride,鈥 said Shirkie, adding that most of her rides take about an hour to complete.

This is the online link for people to donate:

People can also phone her at 306-861-4530, and she can take cheques made payable to Sickkids Foundation or cash. This is a charitable organization so receipts are issued for donations.

鈥淚 am a shameless promoter of this effort as I really believe we need to find a cure for Kids鈥 Cancers. No kid should have to suffer the way these kids do,鈥 said Shirkie.
