MOOSE JAW — Spring is in the air, and with it comes the much-anticipated opening of Windmill Greenhouses for the 2025 gardening season.

The greenhouse, located on the eastern outskirts of Moose Jaw, will kick off the season with its annual “Gardening by Moonlight” event, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2.

“It’s a really different way of looking at the greenhouse — in the evening with all the fairy lights and candles,” manager Brenna Wells said about the moonlight-themed reopening event. “It just (creates) a different ambience.”

The come-and-go event offers a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy an assortment of homemade cupcakes, cookies, coffee, and punch as they wander through the greenhouse under a canopy of twinkling lights. There’s no formal closing time, but guests are encouraged to come early so they can take their time exploring what this season has to offer.

While there are no specific sales for the event, Wells said the greenhouse has maintained the same prices for its products over the past five or so years. To maintain this, any of the increased costs from inflation or newly imposed tariffs on imported components will be absorbed by the business — saving loyal customers money at the till.

“Life is hard as it is,” Wells explained. “We don’t want to (increase) any of our prices.”

Windmill Greenhouses is a longstanding business in Moose Jaw, known for its wide variety of annuals, perennials, tropical plants, vegetables, and giftware.

When the greenhouse first opens, a somewhat limited selection of plants will be available for purchase. Wells noted that vegetable plants such as tomatoes, squash, and herbs are already growing strong but won’t be available until around Mother’s Day. The reason for this, she explained, is to ensure that each plant is well-rooted and safe for planting when it’s sold.

For Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 11, the greenhouse will hold its second mainstay event featuring more home-baked goods and punch served onsite. This year, Windmill is partnering with local radio station 800 CHAB, offering gardeners a chance to win one of 12 hanging flowerpots by calling in to share their gardening stories.

New this year, shoppers will find a broader range of giftware including solar light displays, dinnerware, coffee mugs, aprons, lanterns, and even themed gifts ideal for green-thumbed parents on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day later on.

Wells credited the greenhouse’s success to its loyal customer base and dedicated staff, many of whom have been with Windmill for years, including her own 23-year career.

“We have some amazing customers who have supported the greenhouse for a lot of years, and we see (many of the) same faces every year,” she said. “I’m very proud of them. They’re very kind, and you couldn’t ask for better customers, honestly.”

After Gardening by Moonlight, Windmill Greenhouses will be open Monday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Then, after Mother’s Day on May 11, its hours will expand to Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Windmill Greenhouses is located at 1640 Ominica Street East and can be reached at 306-692-1663.
