In football, the word discipline has many meanings, but no matter which definition you choose, success hinges on it.
For example, a player's discipline regarding their assignment on a play or within a scheme can change the outcome of a game. Additionally, a team's discipline regarding not taking penalties can have the same effect. Riders' legendary quarterback Darion Durant fully agrees.
“No doubt, especially those that are just discipline-based, right? I mean, guys want to fight with helmets on and take cheap shots after the whistle and, you know, retaliation against quarterbacks, and it’s just dirty football that’s going on. A lot of those penalties, uh, it’s just about discipline.”
“So you best believe that in these team meetings, uh, they’re holding these guys accountable because you make a stupid mistake and a bad penalty. Not only could you cost guys, uh, you know, the game, but you know, their livelihoods are at stake. If you lose a game because of a dumb penalty and it ends up keeping you out of the playoffs and then, you know, that team is not together at the end of the season, you can look back directly on some of those plays and say that this is the reason why you lost your job. And that’s not a good thing to have to look back on,” Durant added.
