The SGI traffic safety spotlight for April was a bit of a dud, and the provincial insurer is just fine with that.
Only 14 people were ticketed as police around the province targeted vulnerable road users safety.
Eight motorists received citations for failing to yield or stop for pedestrians while five walkers were ticketed for disobeying crosswalk signals or walking into the path of a vehicle. One motorcyclist got a ticket for failing to wear a helmet.
No injuries were reported, which is what these monthly exercises are all about.
鈥淪GI reminds motorists to watch for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists and share the road,鈥 a press release stated. 鈥淰ulnerable road users are reminded to stay alert and walk, bike, and ride with caution. Find more information on vulnerable road users, including tips for sharing the road and guidelines around required gear for new motorcyclists.鈥
While the specific target of the April blitz showed a positive result, speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving statistics was another matter altogether.
There were 5,427 speeding offences recorded, 301 impaired driving related charges and 286 for distracted driving, which included 108 for cell phone use.
The May spotlight is targeting impaired driving in light that the May long weekend is one of the worst times of the year on the roads for injury and death.
Over the holiday weekend....
Full results for the May traffic blitz will be available in late june.
