For the April Traffic Spotlight on speeding, police issued 7,165聽speeding聽tickets.聽
There are 43,200 minutes in April, so that works out to an average of one speeding ticket written every six minutes. (And these numbers聽诲辞苍鈥檛聽include tickets issued from photo speed enforcement).聽
Since a lot of people are聽apparently聽in a hurry these days, we won鈥檛 list the number of tickets for every single聽one of the聽various聽speeding offences under the聽Traffic Safety Act, but聽that 7,165聽included:聽聽
250 tickets for exceeding the limit by more than 35 km/h;聽
65 tickets for exceeding the limit by more than 50 km/h;聽
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 330 tickets for exceeding聽the limit in a school聽zone;聽
38 tickets for exceeding 60 km/h while passing highway workers; and聽聽
528 tickets for exceeding 60 km/h when passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck at roadside with lights flashing.聽
Tickets for聽all of聽those offences are more expensive than regular speeding聽tickets, and聽carry additional demerit points.聽
While fast drivers had police furiously writing tickets,聽speeders聽weren鈥檛 the only ones getting caught聽last month.聽
Other numbers from聽the聽April聽Traffic Spotlight聽reported by law enforcement:聽聽
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 747聽distracted driving violations,聽including聽641 cell phone聽tickets; and聽
Hopefully traffic enforcement will have a 鈥渟lower鈥 May, but that really depends on drivers deciding to ease off the gas pedal and respect those posted speed limits.聽 Please slow down; the nice weather means more pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists on the roads, and motorists need to watch out for these more vulnerable road users.聽 Also: drive sober, without distractions, and buckled up
