CANOE LAKE CREE NATION - A man was taken to hospital and two people were charged with aggravated assault and weapons charges after Beauval RCMP received a report of a shooting on Canoe Lake Cree First Nation.

The report came in April 27 at approximately 12:45 a.m. Officers responded and located an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of investigation, officers identified then located a suspect vehicle in the community. They activated their emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop.

Police say officers pursued the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes. The occupants of the vehicle threw items from it as it was moving. The responding officers had to swerve the police vehicle to avoid the items. The occupants also flashed a flashlight at a police vehicle in an apparent attempt to distract the officer driving, add the RCMP.

The suspect vehicle then left the roadway on Highway 903 and came to a stop. The driver ran into a nearby forested area. The passenger was arrested.

The driver was later located and arrested with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System.

A 21-year-old Clearwater River Dene Nation resident and a 22-year-old Edmonton resident are each charged with:

• aggravated assault;
• discharge firearm with intent;
•  
• careless use of a firearm;
• flight from peace officer;
• dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
• resist/obstruct peace officer;
• unauthorized possession of a firearm;
• possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
• possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and
• pointing a firearm, Section 87(1), Criminal Code;
