PRINCE ALBERT - A 14-year-old youth is facing firearms charges after attempting to brandish a firearm during a foot pursuit Friday night.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. on May 9, police were dispatched to the area of 13th Street West and 16th Avenue West for a weapons call.

Initial information stated three males appeared to be walking with a shotgun.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes and began to canvass the area.

Shortly after, officers observed three males matching the suspect descriptions walking westbound on the rotary trail.

Two of the males were stopped by police, while the other was located a short time later but did not stop.

The final suspect fled on foot, beginning a foot pursuit. A member of the Canine Unit then observed the suspect reach for his waistband and observed a firearm on his person.

At this time, a police service dog was released and made contact with the suspect; as officers continued to approach, the suspect once again began to pull the firearm from his waistband.

An officer then discharged a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) and made contact with the suspect.

The suspect then threw the firearm over a fence before being arrested.

Parkland Ambulance attended the scene to assess the suspect male for any injuries.

Officers searched the area and located a sawed-off shotgun.

A subsequent search of the suspect at police cells resulted in locating ammunition.

As a result, a 14-year-old male youth has been charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

He is scheduled to appear in court on May 23.
