Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, irritability, Koplik spots (small white spots inside the mouth), and a red blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads down the body.
People may be eligible for preventive treatment for up to six days following exposure. In cases of medical distress, residents are urged to seek care immediately but must inform medical staff of possible exposure before arriving.
Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Individuals can spread the virus from four days before the rash appears to four days after.
Vaccination is the best prevention. The measles vaccine is safe, effective and free. Two doses offer nearly 100 per cent protection. Residents are encouraged to check their immunization records through MySaskHealthRecord or consult a health-care provider.
