SASKATOON — The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is pleased to announce the opening of gift for  |  from grand  |  mothers, a new exhibition by Saskatoon-based artists Vanessa Hyggen and Laelia LeFeuvre, running from May 29 to Oct. 11.
Presented as part of the Museum’s Artist-in-Residence Program, this exhibition explores the matrilineal transmission and reclamation of knowledge, memory and tradition through textile-based art.
Hyggen, a Woodland Cree and Norwegian artist from Northern Saskatchewan, and LeFeuvre, a fibre artist of Ukrainian heritage, bring together their cultural lineages in a collaborative project rooted in ancestral connection and material exploration.
Rooted in family stories and inspired by the museum’s extensive collection, the artists reflect on how heritage is carried through craft: beading, spinning, sewing and weaving. Their work is shown in conversation with historic Ukrainian objects from the museum’s holdings and pieces from Hyggen’s collection of Indigenous beadwork. These dialogues across generations are both personal and communal — acts of remembering, recovering, and honouring the women who came before.
“Craft is more than technique,” say the artists. “It’s a way of reconnecting with lost knowledge and bringing it into our lives today.”
The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday, May 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., and a conversation with the artists on Saturday, May 31 at noon. Admission is by donation.
This exhibition is made possible with support from Saskatchewan Lotteries and SaskCulture, Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan and SIGA.
