The end of the voting period for the James Weir People’s Choice art competition is fast approaching, with the last day to cast a ballot on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery, on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library.
The results of the votes for a favourite piece of art work will be announced at a reception on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Allie Griffin Art Gallery.
Meanwhile, exhibits at the Signal Hill and Credit Union art galleries will continue through the month of February.
“The ARTie Trio” is a collection of photos by local photographers Art Wallace, Art Beck and Kim Schneider at the Signal Hill Art Gallery, located on the second floor of the Signal Hill Arts Centre.
The photography of Erin Graas is featured at the Credit Union gallery, entitled, “Home and Away”.
A feature for the Weyburn Arts Council and Signal Hill Arts Centre this year is the Weyburn Boardwalk Public Art Project, with the theme to celebrate Canada’s 150th year of confederation.
The project is for artists to create banners which will be displayed along the boardwalk by the Souris River, between Government Road and Third Street.
This project is open to all ages of artists of all mediums, with artists to be resident of the Weyburn area.
Banners selected for this project will be displayed along the boardwalk in September and October, corresponding with Culture Days, which will be held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. Application forms and more information will be available at the reception for the People’s Choice competition.
Also related to Canada’s 150th year is the national Canada Day Challenge 2017. This will be the 30th year for this challenge, where young Canadians are encouraged to show their artistic vision for Canada for the next 150 years.
They can enter any of the categories, including Draw It! (drawing or painting), Snap It! (photography) or Write It! (creative writing). Entries for the challenge can be entered between now and March 31, with the chance to win a trip for two to Ottawa, to take part in Canada Day celebrations.
