You'd think heading into the final week of the regular season more than two teams would be locked into their playoff positions, but that isn't the case in the North Saskatchewan River Hockey League.

Day one of the 2011 SaskTel Tankard began, as expected, cautiously, but the excitement picked up inside the Civic Centre and finished with three games coming down to the final rock in the final draw of the day.

The SaskTel Northern Men's playdown was held at the Unity Curling club January 20-23 with 23 teams competing. Among those curlers at the event were some from the Humboldt region.

The Battle River Archer's Club went to Lethbridge, Alta. Jan. 21 to 23, intent on winning and they didn't disappoint.

They couldn't win over Melfort, but they triumphed over the Hawks. The Humboldt Broncos took on the Melfort Mustangs twice between January 25 and 28 and were unable to come up with a win.

A local track and field athlete set a new record in the U.S. recently. Brianne Theisen of Humboldt, gained the most points ever in a pentathlon while competing in Washington.

Let's get this party started. The 2011 Men's Provincial SaskTel Tankard starts today at the North Battleford Civic Centre. The draw was released last week, and the 16 teams will all be in action Wednesday.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks and Prince Albert Bears battled at the Battleford Arena Thursday in Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League action and it was the Bears rallying to earn the win.
