Canora had a memorable year in 2017 and we are looking forward to more great things in 2018. 2017 The Canora celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday was the highlight of the summer and set the stage for a change of venue to our Winter Lights Festival.

I usually bring in the new year encircled by over 100 loving family members, celebrating the gift Christ gave us in His body and blood.

Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL) curlers competed in Benito December 19, took a break for the holidays, and completed their regular season January 2 in Norquay.

Shannon Leson of Leson’s Funeral Home in Canora has been elected as the chair of the Funeral and Cremation Services Council of Saskatchewan. (FCSCS) Born and raised in Canora, Leson has been licensed as a funeral director since 1993.

Cameron Lozinski, a former Canora resident, has received recognition for his wide-ranging volunteer work by being included in the Ace Burpee’s Top 100 Most Fascinating Manitobans of 2017.

An attempt to unionize Tim Hortons workers in Canora is underway and the parties involved are dealing with an unfair labour practice complaint. The workers at the coffee and doughnut shop, located on Main Street, are employed by Amenity Health Care.

The Canora Atom Black Cobras hosted a hockey tournament on December 8-10, and came away victorious in the A-side championship game.

River Ridge Fish and Game held its antler measuring event on December 8 at the Canora Activity Centre. There were a total of 15 heads measured, which is similar to last year.

The Canora Ag Society strives to support worthy local causes, and members were pleased to donate just over $1,625 to the Canora Filling the Gap Food Bank on December 14.
